Most collectors have a soft spot for the Pepsi, yours truly included. Over the years, my Pepsi pieces had included various pieces of Seiko PADI variants, SKX009J1 (that had been given much wrist times), vintage 16710, and the likes.
During Baselworld 2018, 2 pieces of Pepsi caught my eye namely Rolex GMT-Master ii 21670BLRO and Tudor Black Bay GMT M79830RB. Both pieces quickly became huge hits after the launch.
I placed my reservation towards both pieces; but the real world price of the Rolex upon its availability had me thinking twice. At the point of this blog entry, it is going for circa RM78k-RM80k for BNIB pieces. The Tudor, on the other hand, was going at circa RM18k-RM21k for the bracelet version, which would be the variant to get amongst the 3 choices. After all, it would be easy to track for a leather strap or Nato thereafter; but not the other way round.
Real world prices of the Tudor as seen during recent times :
Locally, it was still possible to get a Tudor at below RM20k, which would make it a bit of a bargain compared to the Rolex. With an in-house movement and 70-hour power reserve, and real world prices of 1/4 of its more famous sibling's, the Tudor would be a watch that one could wear without the need to baby it around too much.
And with the Black Bay variants being added up to just a tad too much i.e. Burgundy, Blue, Black, Green, Bronze, Steel, Chrono, Dark, 58, etc, I find that the GMT could be the most versatile of the lot and could be used as a medium-cost beater for the frequent-flyer. Almost the purr-fect watch then, for my monthly travels.
A piece then, would go into my collection; and the rest of the ones that I get, would go to fellow collectors looking for a medium-cost GMT. 2 pieces flipped here @ https://andywristwatches.blogspot.com/2018/08/wts-tudor-black-bay-gmt-pepsi-model-no.html; but do look out for more pieces on this blog from time to time.
(NB : Let's face it- you have to take the watch on and off, on and off; for the security scans and checks. The watch will get hairline scratches over these activities, and perhaps the occasional knock here and there. If one has to be completely honest, scratching the RM78k Rolex was going to be more heart-wrenching compared to the RM18k Tudor.)
