It's 11am on an April Fools' Day, and I just read an e-mail from a reader asking what was my possible next catch?
Interesting indeed, and almost without hesitation, I could tell you what was the one watch that left a lasting impression from Baselworld 2017.
The Rolex Sky-Dweller.
What's not to like about this piece? The only Rolex with such a complication - checked. A Rolex that one could treat as a formal watch (ala Datejust) or informal weekend watch (now in stainless steel and white gold) - checked. A Rolex that would not be a watch for the masses but for the discerning niche crowd whom know their watches - checked.
Yes, at certain price points, I liked watches that would not cost an arm and a leg, and yet would not be sported on very other chaps' wrists. I chose the (now discontinued) Sea-Dweller 4000 precisely because every Tom, Dick and Harry had a Submariner these days. And a Sky-Dweller would blend in with the Datejust business crowd, yet stand out to those in the know. Perfect.
The only thing that may change the equation would be the waiting list. Let's see how things go when the local ADs start taking in the registrants. I may just start flipping off some other watches in my collection, to build up the war chest towards the Sky-Dweller.
If I could only own 2 watches, then a pair of Sea-Dweller 4000 and Sky-Dweller would be a good combination. One for the water sports, and one for my frequent travels. A good balance between price and features, both found on these 2 pieces and delivered along the lines that only Rolex watches could deliver so. You know the feeling.
You mentioned about flipping some watches for funds for the Rolex Sky Dweller. Which watch are you flipping? How about the Omega PO James Bond? And Omega Speedmaster Panda? Would you ship to Sydney? How much for both?
