Franken Mod : CuSn MM300

How hard could it be?

That was the picture that we had in mind when we undertook this CuSn MM300 project. Getting the MM300 dial and handset was costly and quite some chore- that much we knew; but I had contacts in Japan whom were able to score us a couple of genuine MM300 dials so we started off smoothly.

There had been many MM300 homage pieces created by fellow modders and micro brands; but we were undertaking the project such that it would be a real Franken Mod between original parts and re-manufactured bronze parts in an attempt to stay as close to the original MM300 inspiration, as possible.

The machining process soon took off and the case, crown, case back, lumed ceramic bezel, and sapphire crystal came together to fit like glove. We chose the reliable Caliber NH35 workhorse to power the abomination, so the 8L35-MM300 dial legs had to be clipped and a corresponding chapter ring re-engineered to fit between the case and dial. It was indeed a humbling, learning process along the way.

But months later, we finally have the finished CuSn MM300. The actual watch would be shipped back to Malaysia in a week or two; and I would bring this to the next watch meet so that fellow Seikoholics and modders could look at this piece in the metal and be inspired for more Franken Mods. It could almost passed off as an original creation from Seiko Japan! If they made bronze watches, that was.

I have an orange Isofrane ready to match to this CuSn MM300 back in my Watch Room, so all that's waiting was just the grand revealing.

And if all goes well, the Andywristwatches custom watch build that many fellow readers had requested time and again, could just be in the pipeline. I have been discussing with a friendly watch manufacturer whom I had been liaising with over the last few months, to conclude on the Andywristwatches case design and parts; and would aim to produce a limited collection of 30 pieces for fellow readers here.

Exciting times ahead indeed!
