Happy Trinity

Well Loh, thanks for writing in and I do appreciate you swinging by to read this humble blog of mine. With regards to the 3 Rolex watches that you have attached in your e-mail, I personally would not have gotten all 3 of them unless I already have no other models to add into the collection.

Why so?

Well, for starters, most collectors venture into Rolex with the Submariner. In this case, the 116610LN (left) was a good bet. However, it was true that you would tend to notice most people sporting a 116610LN on their wrists, once you purchased your own and became more aware of this model in the wild.

Some people then, would prefer to have something more exclusive- and that would be the 126600 (right). Essentially a beefier version of the 116610LN and more attractive given its red line, the watch was also heavier and bigger, so you might need to have the right size to carry it better.

And finally, the best of the lot in my humble opinion would be the 116610LV (middle). It was more attractive than both the above options, although this could be subjective; and you got to see the green mixed with gold dust sunburst dial to appreciate its true beauty. Pictures simply do not do justice to its real looks. It tends to wear better than the 126600; so this was where I would put my funds.

After choosing one of the above, if I still have capacity to add 2 more watches for the holy trinity, I would then go for the 116710BLNR and 116500LN. Then, one would have covered Air, Land, and Sea.

Seiko 126710BLRO

... when you have to improvise as you still have not managed to get the stainless steel Pepsi at a relatively reasonable premium. So the Seiko has to carry the fort for now :)

Speed Masters

No judgement there- it's entirely up to you to decide how you want to use your Speedmaster piece. Not all of us use it for a moon walk anyway :)

Green Is The New Black

Skyscraper as a movie totally rocks, although it was much-reported as a bomb in the States due to various reasons. The fact that it was aimed at the Chinese market when the trade war was currently on-going, would not helped, by my reckoning. Still, cast away your political bias and walk into the cinema purely for the reason of being entertained by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in his role as a former-militaryman-turned-most-protective-father-in-the-world; and you would not be disappointed.

Since he was playing the role of the military man, I gathered that wearing the BR03-92 Military Type along with camouflage gear, would be the ideal watch to bring along to the cinema.

After all, Green is the new Black, a fact that the collector whom just collected the Hulk from me would earnestly agree. And with the real world prices of green pieces such as Hulk (RM48k!) and SLA019 (RM18k!) sky-scraping to new heights, collectors were rushing head-over-heels hunting for such pieces. Even Ethan Hunt would be facing an impossible mission to look for new pieces at AD RRP pricing- no sir, you would just have to pay a premium like everyone else.

Back to the BR03-92 MT, it can't compete with the above examples in terms of WR (MT has 100m vs the above at 300m) but then again, it was made for a different element i.e. the skies. It's unique aviation instrument shape and ceramic case, made this piece wear substantially different from other green pieces.

And for a non-diver watch, it's lume does kick ass to an extent.

There you have it, folks; green is the new black and when green is encased in a black ceramic case, it definitely pops out!

Adding 2 More Rolex Sports Watches

I received the following from a fellow reader :

Without stating your budget, it is a bit hard to recommend the new watch that you might want to add into your collection. You probably started your journey with the 14060/114060 since this was one of the most basic of the Rolex route, and added the 116520 along the way. Either way, both of these were good models and was a good start. Next was whether do you want to go the premium route, to still stick with the basic route.

If you want to go with the basic route, 2 models that you could consider were the Milgauss 116400 and Explorer ii 216570. These were not highly-demanded models and therefore could be gotten relatively easily. However, don't expect them to appreciate like the hotly-contested models.

On the other hand, if you choose to invest more capital into getting the premium models, which were hot as potatoes and would only appreciate over time, then you probably could not go wrong with  any of these models :

Submariner :116610LV
Daytona : 116500LN
GMT : 116710BLNR / 116710BLRO

Either way, have fun adding up nice pieces to your collection! And if the Hulk gets discontinued after you have added it into your collection, then you could expect a big appreciation coming up!

P/S : However, you might have to prove your worth before you could get one, so here's one way you could be a superhero to earn your treasure. Enjoy saving your other halves, mate...

#speedytuesday

Okay, today being TGIF, it's probably not exactly #speedytuesday. But this Speedy being in Panda guise and therefore, could both be used in formal or casual settings so I thought what-the-heck and just went with it.

Okay, perhaps also because it had been sitting pretty in the watch winder for a while now; and an early messages that I read from fellow readers with regards to this Speedy, had me choosing this piece in my morning selection.

To both readers, thanks for swinging by my blog. I myself am just learning along while interacting with fellow watch collectors and the real Master Shifus.

This is a fun hobby and I'm sure that you would enjoy it. Looking at the first reader's collection, the 114060LN and 116610LN make great pieces, although it would looked like he might want to consider adding some colours into his collection.

This Panda made it into my collection a couple of years ago; and while my collection has gone through much re-configurations, it has remained steadfast as a collectible piece. I sent it to Omega to recalibrate (this being a chronometer) in May 2018; and they were nice enough to give it a full complete servicing worth RM2,800, which extended its warranty to May 2020. I have the necessary paperwork; but you could easily give a call to Omega Malaysia and check on its serial no to get the same information.

Size is 40mm, and you could gauge its comparison next to my 40mm Daytona. It comes with Cordura strap, the same material as used for military wear so you could be assured that it was a hard-wearing strap that could last for years and years of usage, and won't be scratched like bracelets.

You probably know that I loved to experiment with straps, so I also have a vintage bronze leather strap that matches the Speedy really well, going with it for free.

There you have it- an icon from Omega ready to be added onto the wrist of a space enthusiast, or not.
