Short Term Review : Maranez Rawai Brass

Readers would know that I decided to try out a sub-brand called Maranez not long ago, and ordered its Rawai-series with green California dial and brass case.

I was quite seasoned in making watch purchases from overseas, and a cool tip was always to get the seller to label the watch as a sample- in my case, it was a sample for my blog review (previously, it was alright as watches were exempted from taxation but with the GST coming in from April 1st, you could be sure that customs were going to be rather hawk-eyed no matter if these were labeled as samples or otherwise) to prevent the unnecessary customs hassle. Still, readers had shared how their watches were held at customs and they had to travel to KLIA to get the items released. So, buying from overseas was always going to be that bit more exciting- to see if your watch arrives safely and without a hitch.

Maranez ensured that the water-tight case cum watch box was well protected from the travelling risks of damages. Amongst the many watches that I had received from overseas, including branded Swiss watches from overseas AD, I must say that Maranez, although a sub-brand, had put lots of thought into ensuring that its watches reach the buyers' hands in good form.

Make no mistake, the Rawaii at 45mm excluding crown (and 56mm from lug to lug) was a thick watch (18mm), which inevitably attracted envious looks towards your wrist like a bunny to a carrot patch. This was not a watch for the faint-hearted. It was made from brass, which meant that patina would form over time. And its 166g weight could be felt when it was adorning your wrist.

I took another brass-inspired watch that I had on-hand i.e. Seiko Prospex Field Monster LE (RRP : RM1,445), for comparison with the Maranez Rawai Brass (RRP : RM1,300). Note that the Prospex was a 44mm piece.

While the Rawai was a homage towards the Panerai divers of the past (as per the Maranez-and-Pam picture below sourced from Net) and the Prospex was an aviation-inspired piece, the 2 watches were more closely-related than what one may thought. As beating within the heart of the Rawai was the Seiko caliber NH35 hacking automatic movement, while the Prospex had the Seiko caliber 4R36 hacking automatic movement. Both were dependable movements that were easily-serviced and affordably-procured.

The Rawai was a very attractive piece in its own right. The double-domed acyclic crystal brought about memories from the yesteryears, and the bezel turned smoothly in its uni-direction with no freeplay. The crown and its protector was well-made altogether. And the huge buckle matched with the 24mm Maranez leather strap really made the Rawai "popped" out.

The green Cali dial in particular, really matched the brass case and it was no wonder that other series in the brand tended to have the green Cali combo sold-out first.

The Rawai was an affordable entry into ownership of brass horological items, and when it had such an interesting design albeit as a homage piece, it was really a no-brainer to add this piece into one's collection.

What other brass watches, at circa RM1,300, could one purchase from the open market these days? Alternative Channels had a few pieces that it imported into Malaysia and was selling new at RM1,250; but I gathered that the previous stock were already sold out.

I would definitely be tempted to add other Maranez pieces to my blog review in the near future, and here's to the growth of this sub-brand and may Sara and her team bring us more interesting pieces in the near future!

My favorite wear these days, whether as office wear, or during bike rides, or bringing the kids to the parks; was the 2012-launched Tudor Pelagos made from the premium Titanium Grade 5. Interestingly, from the list, you could see that the 1999-launched Tag Heuer Kirium Ti5 was made from the same material.

I began consolidating my collection in Christmas 2014 so that I could maintain a more wearable collection instead of buying more watch winders. Ultimately, I hope to maintain circa 6 mechanical pieces and 4 battery-assisted pieces i.e. altogether 10 pieces, which would be more manageable. I am proud to say that I am getting there.

Going forward, I would like to add either a pre-owned Submariner Hulk LV or Classic LN that another collector had indicated that he was ready to let go, or a new GMT-Master II that was rather suitable with my traveling lifestyle.

So many watches, so little resources. Oh well, c'est la vie...

GST Around The Corner : Shopping-Craze Is On!

Have you seen the crowd at the shopping malls over the weekend? It was almost as though all the goods were free for the taking!

People were just buying stuff like crazy. Being a WIS, naturally I took a look at watch boutiques and people were snapping off the luxury pens and watches like crazy too! Herd-mentality I heeded not, but I took a look at a pair of nice Mont Blanc writing instruments.

I loved the Starwalker series and uses one as my daily business pen. This set shall complement my Starwalker well.

A fellow watch collector informed me that he had over-spent a big chunk of his bonus on new watches over the last 2 weeks in view of the 6% GST from April 1st onwards. His missus was naturally not happy with his trigger-happy ways, and told him to flip off some of the current ones in his collection.

I knew that he had a couple of Submariners and asked if he was interested in flipping off the Submariner Hulk LV or Classic LN that he purchased a couple of years back. I was pretty interested in taking off one of those pieces from his hands if he was gamed for the flip. He told me that it could just be the win-win situation that he was looking for, and promised to revert on the matter.

Now to wait for an answer and to see if I could entice one of 'em Subbies to join my clan. Oh, the excitement!

Bell & Ross BR01-97 with Military Digital Camo Strap

BR01 truly rocks... anywhere, anytime, anyhow. For those whom wrists could carry the 46mm BR01 without looking like you were wearing your father's watch, then you owe it to yourself to get this macho and toolish aviation piece, which was truly one-of-a-kind.

50% Discount : SevenFriday Automatic Watches at OMG Prices Now

When I looked through my Post Statistics in Google Analytics, I found that there were much interests  from fellow readers in the SevenFriday watches. Many asked me with regards to the replica (using same Miyota movements) but I always answered that I would recommend saving towards the genuine SevenFriday, and cautioned that I have not held the replica pieces on-hand so I do not know if there looked and felt as good as the pictures that were circulated by the sellers.

Well, it seemed that SevenFriday watches' prices had bottomed-up and GroupOn was selling off P1 and M2 pieces at RM1,999 and RM2,699 respectively. That was a cool 50% off the RRP, and the best thing was... these were genuine SevenFriday watches with 2 years warranty.

Personally, I was no longer into SevenFriday as I felt that it was more of a fashion watch that had had its 15 mins' of fame; but to fans whom beg to differ, this could be the time for them to pick up some pieces.

OMG!

Bloomberg : Rolex offshoot Tudor comes of age

There was another article in The Edge today with regards to Tudor at Baselworld 2015.

I have really been a big fan of Tudor since its Heritage series; and surprisingly, I find myself reaching for the Pelagos daily from the winder these days. It was just that comfortable and under-the-radar that it could be worn for any occasions, be it suit-and-tie from Mondays-Thursdays and casual Friday on ummm, Fridays.

In a way, I have demonstrated what another WIS had stated in his One Man, One Watch and Why article, that the Pelagos could just be that watch. Diver genre (WR 500m)- checked; Good size (42mm)- checked; Lightweight (titanium)- checked; Amazing blue lume- checked; Date function- checked; Comfy Glidelock- checked; Low-profile- checked.

And after Tudor added the extra lines on the dial of the Pelagos 2.0, I appreciate my Pelagos 1.0 even more thereafter. It just looks so right and balanced to me.

Zulu Straps Forthcoming...

Just made an order towards 2 Zulu straps as per the following :

1) 3-Ring Zulu (orange) with brushed SS surgical-grade hardware @ USD15; and

2) 5-Ring Zulu Extreme (olive) with PVD surgical-grade hardware @ USD18.

I have an idea that the orange Zulu would match nicely with the Citizen ProMaster Depth Meter, while the olive Zulu Extreme would be good on the Seiko Prospex Field Monster, or the Tudor Pelagos. We'll just have to see after the said straps arrive from USA vide courier, and I match the straps to the watches accordingly.

Some of my other watches that I have matched with Nato and Zulu straps included the following :
